Jänissaari Nature Base

Ancient Rabbit Island

Manta Nature Services' nature base is located in Jänissaari, Nuorajärvi, which is an ancient campsite. Stone Age settlements have been mapped on the island, so people who lived and traveled since the Stone Age have considered Jänissaari with its sheltered coves a safe campsite. The island is owned by Tornator Oyj and we have rented a small area of the island as a campsite.

Our nature base is equipped with a hut, a heated tent and an outdoor shelter. There are plank bridges leading from the beach to the hut, tent and toilet, so getting around is easy even with assistive devices and strollers. The plank bridges also automatically guide the movement of people and therefore the terrain is less worn. Jänissaari nature base is used by our company groups, and we do not rent the camp just so that our guides are not with us on the trip.

Jänissaari invites you to a nature adventure all year round

Despite its small size, Jänissaari is a diverse natural destination. The southern tip of the island reaches far towards Karpanjärvi at low tide and attracts swimmers with its sandy beaches. The northern end of the island is covered in mixed forest, and in autumn, the groups of aspens that grow here and there glow with their brilliant colors. Among the mosses and sparrows, a keen-eyed traveler may find forest mushrooms in the form of chanterelles and boletus. From time to time, you can see capercaillies foraging in the old shield-barked pines of the island, and you can often hear the rustling of wings and the croaking of ravens from somewhere on the island.

The Nuorajärvi lake surrounding the island offers excellent opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. In winter, people catch perch with ice fishing and look for large perch habitats. In summer, people go angling, trolling, and use nets, hooks, and baits. The most common prey fish are pikes, pike-perches, perch, bream and roach. Even if Ahti doesn't give you any catch, there are always exciting fishing stories to be had on the trips.

Jänissaari is a true Finnish paradise island.

The Helsinki Foundation wants to buy Jänissaari to protect it.

The Helsinki Foundation is a non-profit foundation that uses donated funds to acquire land and leave it in its natural state. The internationally operating foundation has so far acquired over 200 hectares of land in Finland, Estonia and Tasmania, Australia. The foundation offers a community-based way of working for the environment. Conservation work based entirely on private donations is a very effective way to take care of biodiversity and valuable carbon sinks together.

A fundraiser is currently underway to purchase and protect Jänissaari. If successful, this will ensure that Jänissaari remains in its natural state. Perhaps you would also like to support the fundraiser and participate in the joint effort? Read more about the Jänissaari-related collection!
